RailKing One Gauge G Scale Dash-8 Diesel Engines Now In-Stock

Check Out The Quick Start Video

September 26, 2018 - In the late 1980s, as General Electric and General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division engaged in heated competition (that continues today) for market share in the high horsepower category, GE announced its Dash 8 line of diesel locomotives.

Although the first demonstrator version had only 3,200 hp, most of the Dash 8s had 4,000 hp when delivered and were therefore designated Dash 8-40. Because GE builds its diesel locomotives in five modules, it was able to customize its Dash 8s for each buyer to an unusual degree.

Some railroads ordered their Dash 8s with conventional cabs, while others opted for the wider North American or comfort cabs, identified by a "W" in the engine name. Some Dash 8s have 4-wheel trucks — denoted with a "B" — while a Dash 8-40C has 6-wheel trucks. This variety meant that these diesels, which were designed for fast freight duty, also found a home in Amtrak passenger service. Despite their many differences, all Dash 8s share microprocessor control. The microprocessor, a small computer, regulates rpm, fuel injection volume, generator excitation, and many other operational features to make the Dash 8s run more efficiently than any diesels before them.

2018 Freight Car Design Contest Winners Announced

October 10, 2018 - M.T.H. Electric Trains has revealed the winners of the 2018 Freight Car Deco Design Contest featured in the 2018 Volume 2 Catalog.

Last April we invited you to dig into your files, archives or library — or your desk drawer — and send us the prototype paint schemes you’ve always wanted to see on a Premier or RailKing freight car. We received 122 entries, more than for any previous M.T.H. contest. In total, four winners caught our eye as cars we’d definitely like to own.

Look for these cars in upcoming M.T.H. catalogs. And while they didn’t win, a number of other entries may also appear as future RailKing and Premier offerings. Each of our winners will receive $100 in M.T.H. rolling stock of their choice, as well as their winning entry when it is produced. Non-winners will also receive a model of their car if it appears in a catalog within the next three years.

2018 HO Scale GP38-2 Diesel With Proto-Sound 3.0 Now In-Stock

Check Out The Quick Start Video

October 3, 2018 - Produced from 1972 to 1986, the GP38-2 helped inaugurate Electro-Motive’s "Dash-2" series of locomotives and became one of EMD’s all-time best sellers. With over 2200 engines sold throughout North America, rare was the railroad that did not roster these reliable, second-generation EMD workhorses.

Building on the success of the GP38 introduced in 1966, the Dash-2 model looked almost identical on the outside but incorporated a host of internal upgrades that lowered exhaust emissions and improved reliability, ease of maintenance, and tractive effort. Most significant was the replacement of the maze of hard-wired circuits, switches, interlocks, and relays — which had characterized first-generation diesels and had been the source of many of their service issues — with modular, solid-state electronics. Other improvements toughened the pistons, rings, and bearings of the 2000-horsepower, non-turbocharged model 645 prime mover.

The result was an engine so hard working and dependable that it became as common on American railroads as the F-unit was in the 1950s and ‘60s. Trains magazine recognized this in 1982 by designating B&O GP38 #3802 (a pre-Dash-2 model) as the All American Diesel; the engine resides today in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum, repainted in its 1982 Chessie System colors. Many GP38-2s have soldiered on for more than three decades and remain in service today on short lines and regional railroads.

New for 2018, this accurately modeled GP38-2 joins our economically priced Ready2Rail lineup in four prototypical paint schemes. While Ready2Rail locomotives have fewer added-on details than standard M.T.H. motive power, Proto-Sound 3.0 versions feature the same versatile electronics and prototypical sounds found in every Proto-Sound 3.0 engine. In command mode, you can operate this second-generation stalwart with any other DCC- or M.T.H. DCS-equipped models. With the DCS system, you can create a lashup with just a few keystrokes, combining one or more GP38-2s with other Proto-Sound 3.0 first-, second-, or third-generation diesels — and run them all from a single throttle just like the prototype.
